Start-up of a Community Kitchen

Tasty Not Wasty Utilising surplus food and donated food, I am aiming to start a community kitchen – in Cwmbran but easily accessible. I have been part of an initiative to help those in Cwmbran (and sometimes wider area) with food insecurity for so many extremely valid and sometimes upsetting reasons.  This is taking it up a notch and not just supplying the raw ingredients. The aims are to help reduce food waste, I have been collecting and distributing throughout the summer to different food shares and so this is…

“New Normal” in Child Care

With the end of the summer upon us and no corresponding end to the Covid-19 crisis in sight, we as Nursery owners have been coming to terms with the “New Normal” in child care. On the one hand, it has been absolutely marvellous to get back to work. Not only have we and our staff missed the children, it seems that the children have missed us just as much.   Those first few weeks in July where challenging to say the least. Having taken all the necessary steps to be deemed…

Community Spirit holding strong

silhouette of man touching woman against sunset sky

For so many 2020 has been a washout a Annus horribilis the worst of years and the saddest.  It would have been so easy for that sense of community to fall but in Caerleon the story has been very different.  The community has rallied and where there could so easily have been darkness there has been flashes of inspiration and brilliance.  Caerleon rallies around its tree in December and a small group rallied to ensure despite the challenges that we can look forward to Christmas. The amazing photographs captured by Steve…

Community Spirit at its best!

Community Spirit at its best! Several weeks ago, you may recall 1st Caerleon Scouts, Cubs and Beavers requesting the help from any local builders after we had problems with our drains. Following on from that request, Tom Lewis from Highmore Group Property and Facilities Maintenance. came to the rescue. He got his men to work, digging up the ground outside in awful weather conditions. He also then went on to pay for a camera to be put down the drains which showed our pipes were running uphill. The only way…

SLS – Street Life Sarnies

The group started initially for a small stint over the Summer to help a project in Bristol that my family were going to. A project run by volunteers out of car boots, offering sandwich packs, hot food & drinks, clothing/toiletries & support. With around 180-200 guests that specific night in July and 40-60 sandwich packs to watch hunger so rife and visible was pretty gut wrenching. In Bristol summer centres close often for staff holidays & deep cleaning so many find themselves not eating for 3-4 days. In a modern…
